Mountain Alliance is not only a high school non-profit extracurricular program; to its staff and members, it offers a safe haven, a place to call home. 25 years ago, at a time when dropout rates in Watauga County were at an all time high, Jerry Cantwell decided it was time for a change. He came up with the idea for Mountain Alliance, a place intended for at risk kids but open for anyone to receive the guidance that they so desperately needed. Through outdoor activities, leadership programs, trips and just by being amongst others in their situation, these kids are taught priceless lessons that will change the course of their lives forever. ​ Today, Mountain Alliance has grown to hundreds of alumni and staff members, but still maintaining the initial core values and goals that they started with. But as with any non-profit organization, Mountain Alliance struggles to find enough funding as they take on more and more kids looking for the guidance that Mountain Alliance has to offer
